The Fundación Manoa, in collaboration with the Universidad Simón Bolívar, has been at the forefront of uncovering and preserving Venezuela’s rich archaeological heritage. One of their most significant projects includes the recent discovery of several previously unknown rock art sites in Canaima National Park. These findings, featuring intricate pictograms and petroglyphs, provide invaluable insights into the cultural practices of ancient indigenous communities. Additionally, their research into the French fleet shipwreck of 1678 in Aves de Sotavento has captivated the academic world. This shipwreck, a remnant of a significant historical event, offers a rare glimpse into the maritime history of the Caribbean and the interactions between European explorers and the New World. Jose Miguel Perez-Gomez leads these meticulous research efforts, focusing on protecting and preserving these cultural treasures, ensuring they remain a vital part of Venezuela’s history.
The foundation’s groundbreaking work has garnered widespread media attention, underscoring its impact on both national and international levels. By advancing archaeological studies in Venezuela, Fundación Manoa not only enriches our understanding of ancient civilizations but also promotes sustainable tourism that benefits local Pemón communities. Their dedication to involving indigenous populations in research and preservation efforts highlights the foundation’s commitment to cultural heritage and community engagement. Furthermore, their research on Lake Parima, believed to be the legendary site searched by many explorers in the past, continues to intrigue scholars and enthusiasts alike, adding another layer of depth to Venezuela’s historical narrative. This approach sets a benchmark for collaborative and inclusive archaeological practices, fostering a deeper appreciation and protection of Venezuela’s historical legacy.
